I know, it will come…with time. It does for everyone, right? Some people just take a little while to get there, at the home ownership stage. We’re those people. We did everything ass backwards – baby, engagement, marriage, college, second baby…so yeah, it’s understandable that we’re taking longer to get to the whole owning our own house stage.
But still, I can’t help but day dream about it. About what kind of house we want, when we go to look for one. I all but know! I’m going to be one of those really difficult, really stuck up house shoppers. Not in the sense that I will refuse to consider a house because it needs updating or renovating, but because my wish list is pretty long.
Here is what I long for in our first house…
I want it to be in the country, with at least five acres. I don’t want to look out my window and see someone’s house or deck. I want privacy, and lots of it. I want a three bedroom, two bathroom house. I don’t care if it’s “little”, I’d prefer that…less to clean! I’m not picky about levels, it could be a bungalow or a two story house. I’d sort of prefer a bungalow, just because it would be easier on my legs and for Nolan after surgeries. But, two stories would still be manageable (if there were bathrooms on each floor). Original hardwood floors would be pretty cool, but I could live with carpet. Floors are replaceable, after all! An unfinished basement would be ideal, so Matt and I could renovate it into a rec room and spare bedroom. I want a decent sized kitchen with tons of counter space and cupboard space, and either a large eat in area or a dining room. I want decent sized bedroom closets and bedrooms. I don’t really care if I need to update the kitchen and bathrooms, so long as the plumbing and electrical is okay. Actually, it would be fun to design “my dream kitchen” and bathrooms, so I’d kind of prefer a house that needed a little bit of updating. I totally wouldn’t mind living in old country charm for a few years, either!
I want a huge wrap around porch that I can sit on and sip my morning coffee while watching my boys play in the yard. I want a fairly large sized front yard, and an even larger backyard, so that no matter where we are (front porch, back porch) the kids have space to run around.
I want big old trees, greenery and tons of space for gardening. I want to have a vegetable patch and pretty flower gardens. I want to have a pond and a swimming pool, and a playset for the kids. I want to have a huge tree in the backyard that we could build a tree house for the boys. I want shade and I want a natural backyard oasis.
I want air conditioning too, but that goes without saying 😉 I’d also sort of like an old stone fire place, because I think they’re gorgeous and they come in handy at Christmas time for hanging stockings 😉
So, yeah. That’s the kind of home we’re going to look to buy. Right now? It’s my dream house. I know Matt has totally different ideas for his dream house (he wants to build it, have round doors etc etc…yeah his list is pretty endless) but he thinks this sounds like the perfect place to raise two little youngsters.
We’re so far away from home ownership…so far away, and yet I can’t help but dream. I am thankful for our rental, I do love the indoor space but it would be so nice to not have neighbors and to have a huge backyard. I can just imagine how easy getting outside to play and have picnics would be if we had all that yard space!
Sigh. I’m torturing myself, I know.
